‘Improvisations’ (2021) riffs off on the installation process of Divecha’s previous work ‘Negative heaps (of designated waste)’ (2015) - where the installer decides on the arrangements of the discarded tile pieces that constitute the work. This results in varied iterations with each reinstallation. ‘Improvisations’ replicates this process on paper with multiples for each pattern. The invited team of art framers kept rearranging the colored cutouts in their workshop, playfully attempting to find a rhythm in the sequences. ‘Improvisations’ continue Divecha’s interest in questions about agency and authorship, as well as reflecting on the shape shifting nature of cities that constantly rebuild and reimagine themselves. Improvisations are arranged across the gallery booth wall based on the order from a tunnel design.
