In this series, a software collage composed of oriental drawings of Egypt by French missionaries in the 1800s, is distorted and edited to integrate the historic with the contemporary. Using paper as sculpture by spray painting the background and thereafter folding it inwards by hand to create various shapes and shadows. This method combines abstract elements with realistic images creating a reinterpretation of certain historical notions towards the Middle East.
By integrating the background to the front thereby revealing an association between the past and the present, the old and the new combine as a means to express a diverse and multi faced identity relating to Tawakol’s mixed background as an Egyptian-European.
