In Hesam Rahamanian’s series of obscure figurative works, individual body parts are visually rendered in relation to certain humoristic meanings as revealed by the artist’s curious titles. Elaborating on metaphors as direct images that resemble a human commonality through seeing rather than speaking, overcoming language barriers through what is illustrated, the artist depicts fragments of body parts in an abstract manner that literally resemble ironic and metaphoric ‘figures of speech’ that represent certain adjectives, phrases, or functions. Upon closer inspection of each work, it is not immediately clear what they portray or resemble but the titles provide some literal clues and interpretations by method of expressing common phrases without the use of language yet solely as an image. Ultimately, this humorous interpretation of linguistics vis-à-vis what one see’s questions the notion of commonly used ‘phrases’ and the irony behind them and begs further introspection of how can one say something but mean something else?
