I AM HERE: Manal AlDowayan

Manal AlDowayan's participatory art work inspired by “instruction art" I Am Here invited the gallery visitors to stencil the words "I am here" as part of a running print.

By stenciling over others’ own declarations of presence, the visitor is at once eraser and erased: her individualism disappears. Emblematic of the artist’s deep engagement with collective, participatory works, the vast palimpsest investigates the nature of dialogue and tests the tensions between individualism and collectivism. The work will ultimately become black from its own illegibility.
