CHAOS AND AWE: PAINTING FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

Curated by Mark W. Scala

22 June - 16 September 2018

Borrowed from the collection of Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, a selection of works from Rokni Haerizadeh's on-going Fictionville series is presented in Chaos and Awe: Painting for the 21st Century. The exhibition features paintings by an international array of artists that induce feelings of disturbance, curiosity, and expansiveness through the portrayal of forces shaping and disrupting society, such as economics, ideological conflict, language, technology, science, and philosophy. "Haerizadeh's exaggerations bring out the savagery of the actions they depict, highlighting the bestial undertones of political rituals. Victim and aggressor are equally grotesque, as are landscape and architecture," notes writer Media Farzin in her essay Unpeopled: Cosmopolitan Figurations in Recent Paintings, published in the catalogue. Chaos and Awe will tour the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia in November 2018.
